Former midfielder Jamie Redknapp has labelled Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton as one of the worst performances he has seen under Pep Guardiola.
The game at the American Express Stadium saw City take the lead through Erling Haaland in the 23rd minute, but the team conceded two goals in the second half through Joao Pedro in the 78th minute and Matt O’Reilly in the 83rd minute, with Redknapp stating that City’s second-half performance was one of the worst he has seen under Pep.
Jamie “Four bad results,” Redknapp said after City’s defeat. “I think the second half – I’ve watched a lot of Manchester City, I’ve been a big admirer of them for a long time – but that was one of the worst second halves I’ve ever seen from a Pep Guardiola team.”
“They were sloppy. They didn’t defend, they didn’t win one-on-ones, they didn’t get the ball forward. The team was brilliant in the first half, Steph (Houghton) said they should have been 3-0 up at half-time.”
“The second half when they changed, there was only one team that could win the game. As the game went on, you started to see the character, who would go forward and who would get the ball when you needed it the most. There was none.”
“The two centre-backs don’t play together normally and you can see they look like strangers. The goal conceded was a big blow from Manchester City’s point of view.”
